JUMBLING THE ABCs OF DOG TRAINING
the dog decides what is reinforcing
so i had an idea . . .
use training as the reward for calm relaxed place behavior
my dog loves training, in short . . . obsessed. so she gets way too amped.
i want to teach her to relax in between tasks. especially when other people work with her (seems like a good idea with a 105 pound cane corso lol)
so i decided to jumble the ABCs (antecedent/behavior/consequence) of dog training and have the training be the reinforcer (reward).
these videos would be insanely boring if i showed the 10 minutes i sat there waiting for my dog to get calm so that i could reinforce calm with training, so i skipped that part. and of course once she figured out the goal that time got quicker. but just know a lot of waiting happened. waiting while being a boring person is a great way to train a dog! very valuable skill, stop jumping in and giving them the answer. relax, be patient, let them figure it out.
for the training reward i decided to use target disks. i am still calculating when i want to treat with this plan.
turn the volume up for some more explanations
next time i do this, i will be looking for more relaxation. i am very fond of any exercise/game that teaches a dog to go from crazy pants to chill and back again. this puts self soothing in their muscle memory. i want that to be a skill, nothing happening? go into chill mode, even if you were amped two seconds ago.
